“I like the Kasilof River because
it’s it’s pretty and there’s just not as
many people, we come out of the lake in the morning and it’s like
that Alaskan experience that you’re
looking for.” Jimmie Jack

To catch Sockeye Salmon, we use a fly rod 9 weight or 10 weight with an eight or nine fly reel. Kasilof River Sockeye Salmon, also called a green back, weigh five to nine pounds on average. A lot of people say that Sockeye don’t bite, but they’ll rip the rod right out of your hands if you are not paying attention. They do bite it’s just not as often as a silver or a king salmon.

When Sockeye fishing, people are expecting the fish to be a lot further out than they are. There’s a lot of things that can push fish out, but typically they’re really tight to the banks. They’re swimming literally two to three feet out from your feet. They don’t like deep water, and they like to be in the shallows. They’re all packed up, schooling up swimming straight upstream right beside your feet. They’re probably running five or six feet out so we flip out past them, and let the fly flow through them. As it goes through them, you’re looking to feel them stop it. You’re ticking along the bottom and then the fly just stops and then you set the hook.

Sockeye fishing is great because usually when they’re in they’re in pretty thick. You’re going to get a lot of action. It’s fun because they’re powerful and you’re fishing in six to seven knots of river water so when they hit they start going Downstream right away ripping line. We fish for Sockeye all the way from mid-June through mid-August.

Sockeye Salmon have bright red meat. They have more Omega fats than any any other type of salmon so it’s a lot richer in flavor. The meat is firmer than King and Silvers. It is great on the grill or eaten raw because it is sushi grade.
