A trophy-sized rainbow trout caught in Alaska.Winter is in full swing, and many outdoor enthusiasts are contemplating their future fishing agenda as far ahead as the next two seasons. If that’s you, you may want to consider a trip to “The Last Frontier.” Although Jimmie Jack’s Fishing is a premier salmon destination, we also have access to some of the best Alaska trophy rainbow trout fishing. Thanks to the pristine Kenai River, trout fishing is good all summer long, with June, August, and September being the best months. In this post, we’ll share some information on what to expect while chasing these beautiful salmonids in one of Alaska’s most productive trout fisheries.

Kenai River Alaskan Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout in Alaska vary in size and are usually one to five pounds and 22 to 26 inches on average. Still, part of what makes the Kenai River an elite trout fishing destination is the potential to land a trophy specimen of 15 pounds and up to 33 inches! Since rainbow trout are a native breed, our policy is to release what we catch to ensure these majestic fish remain a staple in our beloved waters. You’ll definitely want to bring a camera!

Rainbow Trout Fishing Techniques

Using fly and spinner rods, we target rainbow trout from drift boats, power boats, and from shore. State regulations require using single hooks with artificial lures, so no treble hooks or worms on this trip! While beads and plugs are both practical, fly fishing delivers the most success. Up to four anglers can catch and release these beloved fish on our eight-hour trips.
